Questions
Questions couples ask us
Do you take our insurance?
Tether is out of network with insurance plans, so we do not bill your plan. A plan often covers couples therapy only when one partner has a diagnosis. We can give you a monthly receipt to send to your plan; it may reimburse part of the cost, and it may not.
What is a superbill, and can we use one?
A superbill is an itemized receipt, with the dates, the length of each session and a diagnosis code, that you can send to your plan, which may reimburse part of the cost and decides for itself. Ask your plan how it wants to receive it.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to a written estimate of the cost of your care before you start. We send one before your first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above it, you can dispute the bill. The estimate is not a contract.
How much does it cost, and how do fees work?
Your fee depends on the length of the session, 50 or 80 minutes, and on which clinician you see. It is one fee for the session, not one for each of you. We give it to you in writing before you start. The page on how fees work has the details.
Can we use an HSA or FSA card?
Yes, HSA and FSA cards can be used for sessions. Your plan sets its own rules, so ask it whether couples therapy qualifies.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is 80 minutes with both of you. We ask what you would like to be different, hear each of you in turn, and talk about how we would work together. You do not have to decide anything that day.
How often do we meet, and for how long?
Sessions are 50 or 80 minutes, and you choose. Most couples meet every week or every other week at first. Your clinician sets the pace with you and does not promise a number of sessions.
Are you licensed where we live?
We are licensed in Nevada. In person, that means our office on West Sahara Avenue. By video, both of you must be in Nevada during the session.
What do we do in a crisis?
This site and our messages are not monitored around the clock. Call or text 988 any time, or call 911 in an emergency. If you are afraid of your partner, couples therapy is not the right first step; call us or use the help on our crisis page.
What is private, and what are the limits?
We keep your records private and share them only as the law allows. The law has limits: a serious risk of harm, abuse of a child or an older adult, or a court order. In couples therapy we do not keep secrets between partners.
Do you see teens, children or families?
No. Tether sees adult couples and engaged pairs. If you are looking for a clinician for a teen or a child, we will gladly give you names.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give us 24 hours' notice to change or cancel an appointment. Write or call and say which session; we will find another time.
