How fees work
What nearly every couple asks before a first session.
Insurance we work with
Tether is out of network with every insurance plan, so we do not bill your plan: you pay for each session yourselves. A plan often covers couples therapy only when one partner has a diagnosis, so ask yours before you start. If you want a clinician who bills your plan, we will gladly give you names.
Out of network with insurance plans
Medicare and Medicaid are not accepted
If you pay yourself
Your fee depends on the length of the session, 50 or 80 minutes, and on which clinician you see. It is one fee for the session, not one for each partner, and it is given to you in writing before you start. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are open; ask how to request one. HSA and FSA cards can be used. We ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment.
Receipts for reimbursement
Each month we give you an itemized receipt (a superbill) with the dates and the length of each session, to send to a plan that may reimburse part of out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code that your insurer can see. Your plan decides whether it pays anything, and reimbursement is never guaranteed.
An estimate in advance
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written good faith estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We send one before your first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.
Checking your benefits
We do not check benefits, because we do not bill your plan. To find out whether your plan reimburses out-of-network care, call it before the first session and ask about out-of-network mental health benefits for couples therapy, and which diagnosis code it needs.
Session length
What sets your fee: the length of the session
One fee for the session, not one for each of you, in writing before you start.
- 01
50 minutes
The shorter session, for one topic.
- 02
80 minutes
The longer session, and the length of the first one.
